![]() As always, my goal is to make this art activity easy for adults to teach and a ton of fun for kids to make. This technique of white media on black paper is always a student favorite. I love this lesson because it uses black paper with white crayons and chalk. In contrast to that, the snowy owl also hoots or coos when looking for a mate.In this post, I’m going to share one of my favorite ways to create your own chalk owl drawing. When threatened or faced with danger, the bird will hiss or bark. Snowy owls are known to produce different sounds depending on the situation. They eat about 4-7 of these each day which totals to about 1400 lemmings in just a year. The snowy owl has a large appetite! They’re main diet is a small rodent species called lemming. They’re even able to use heat they’ve collected from the day prior to keep themselves warm during the next. The hollow fibers that make up their insulating feathers trap any light it absorbs, keeping the snowy owl nice and toasty. They learn how to fly in about 1 and half months but are still taken care of by their parents for around 10 or more weeks. Once hatched, the newborns leave the nest in less than a month. The eggs of a snowy owl hatch in about a month. The number of eggs the snow owl lays is dependent on the abundance of food found in the area. They lay around 3 to 11 eggs at a time on nests built on the ground. The snowy owl usually only pairs once and mates for life. This feeding behavior is especially true during the summertime. This species of owl is active in daylight, especially at dusk and dawn. Unlike most owls that sleep during the day and hunt in the night, the snowy owl is the complete opposite. Female snowy owls are also larger in size than their male counterparts. These birds are the heaviest of all North American owls. The male snowy owls are white in color while the females are coated with brown feathers. They also rely on their hearing when prey is burrowed underneath snow or hidden under thick foliage. These birds that are as white as snow rely on their excellent eyesight to hunt prey in the cold expanse of the Arctic. ![]() ![]() They perch themselves on the ground or on small posts, hunting for prey like small rodents, small birds, young rabbits, and fish. ![]() They mainly live in tundras located in the Arctic. The snowy owl is one of the few animals who are able to survive the cold. The females will weigh up to 3 pounds more than the males do on average because they have more fat for insulation during their long migrations. Snowy owls can have a wingspan that measures about four to five feet. They can also be found living in some Northern US states such as Montana and Wyoming. Their main diet consists of lemmings and other rodents such as voles which is why they often fly to those regions during their migration. It has dense plumage which helps keep it warm, feet with scales on them for gripping ice and claws which act like ice picks when it needs to recover from sliding down an icy slope. The snowy owl has several adaptations that allow it to be able to live in the harsh environment of the Arctic Circle. They are one of the few birds that can live in this region because they have a few special adaptations to help them survive. This is because they mainly live in the Arctic regions of the northern hemisphere. Not only that but they also live in cities like Toronto which is one of their favorite spots to hunt prey like pigeons! Recently one was even spotted in New York City!… this was rare indeed. ![]() Snowy owl’s are also known as snowies or arctic owls.
